What You Should Know About the Piqua Shawnee Tribe

The Piqua Shawnee community is regarded as a traditionally nomadic group of people who migrated to many places in the Southeast and the Northeast of the United States. Owing to these migrations, the Piqua Shawnee tribe came into contact with a number of people whose decent was that of the native Indian culture. This led to the tribe adopting part of these cultures as their own. The other factors that altered their culture included the European-American pressure and the Civil War which altered the geographical locations of the tribe as well as imparted some elements of European cultures to their culture.

The evidence of the European culture for the Piqua Shawnee tribe is seen chiefly in the dressing modes they have adopted. Most Shawnee people wear leggings. These leggings are designed for use by both men and women. The use of Ponchos as clothing meant to protect the people from severe cold weather is also another element of the European culture.

The culture of wearing moccasin shoes is also an acquired cultural trait. Other dressing patterns that may be noted among this group of people include the use of headdresses and headbands which may be decked with animal feathers for decoration purposes. To go with these clothing styles, the Piqua Shawnee people may, in addition, do tattoos or paint their faces.
